A Veteran’s Assist

Almost all of the calls that we receive to the 211 Statewide Helpline leave us moved. Our Specialists are trained to listen for needs that are both spoken and unspoken. Sometimes, this requires extra effort, knowledge and heart. We always try to go the extra mile for 211 users and we’re always grateful for the opportunity to serve.

Ron, one of our 211 Specialists received a call from a veteran’s wife. She explained that her husband could not receive Veterans Assistance due to his disability being unrelated to his service. She went on to explain that her husband is on life support and their landlord informed them that not only was rent going up on their unit, but their lease would not be renewed. Because of her husband’s condition, moving would not be simple and the woman needed urgent help. As luck would have it, Ron is a veteran himself and understood the issue completely.

While initial searches weren’t bearing much fruit, Specialist Ron was able to provide the caller with referrals to U.S. Vets and Catholic Charities Hawaii Support Services for Veteran Families. Both nonprofits  are Aloha United Way partner agencies. While the caller expressed great appreciation for the referrals and assistance, Ron was grateful to have been the Specialist on the other end of the line. Website searches can turn up some amazing things, but there are times that a voice on the other end of the phone is what’s needed.

If you, or someone you know needs assistance, please call 211. The service is available free, statewide. Learn more at AUW211.org.
